One Piece of Wood So Many Ways | WHITE HOMES

Hey all! So as I was working on the kitchen island the other day I realized there is one piece of wood I use all. the. time throughout our house. I’ve used it for years on numerous projects. I know you’ve heard me talk about it if you’ve been around for awhile.

It’s the incredible, versatile and oh-so-cheap lattice wood:

Exciting stuff eh? I use it CONSTANTLY. It’s nice and thin and it is the perfect way to finish off projects. I’ve always found mine at Lowe’s and liked that they offered two different sizes. Both were 1/4 inch thick but one was about 1 1/8 wide and another was 1 3/8. Now our store only carries the thinner version. I ended up at Menards the other night for the island to find a larger size and they did not disappoint. (They actually have quite an extensive molding section and I don’t know why I don’t just go there more.) They have the two widths I mentioned plus one that is even bigger at 1 3/4 wide.

Anyway…here are a few of the many ways I’ve used this inexpensive wood over the years. I created a very simple board and batten look in my son’s room with it:

I liked this because it was super easy to work with (it’s easily cut with a handsaw and miter box) and it was thin enough that I didn’t have to replace the baseboards to make this look work – it sits pretty flush against them.

I’ve framed out a lot of artwork with it:

I didn’t even stain that one! Just nailed it on.

The nautical artwork for the Bub’s bathroom was trimmed out with some of it as well:

And our huge IKEA map got a little detail that makes the whole thing pop by framing it out with the lattice and staining it:

I’ve also created artwork (like my Pottery Barn knock off) with it as well!:

It’s the perfect piece of wood to trim out projects like the end of our built ins:

And when I take down doors in our house (which I do a lot), I use it to cover up the holes where the hinges hung:

One of my favorite projects of all time with this thin wood is our new family room fireplace:

The fronts and side of the fireplace and built ins are trimmed out with the lattice.

It used to run about $4 for eight feet but lately it’s nearly $5. Still a great deal to give projects a finished look. It’s lightweight, easy to cut and is so thin it doesn’t take up a ton of space. Love this stuff!

I know some of you have had trouble finding it over the years – it’s always in the molding aisle in the pine area. Like I said, Menards has the best selection I’ve seen but all the hardware stores carry it. :)

Have you ever used this trim? It’s also GREAT for hiding imperfections, which is why I used it on the island. More on that soon!
